It all started with a TED Talk. I was 14-years-old, and I happened to peer over my grandmother's shoulder as she was watching this video about "Brain Magic" on Facebook ( you can watch it here! ) I only saw the beginning where he does this impossible hand trick. I was not only completely fooled, but I absolutely needed to know how he did it.
I scoured the internet for hours, using all kinds of keywords trying to describe what I saw. Then, I came across a book that the trick was published in. Now, you might be thinking, because this is my first book on magic, it had to be a book that Chris Angel wrote. Or even better, a historic looking book that is actually a personal journal of tricks by Houdini!!!
Well... to your disappointment (or perhaps delight), of all the books I could've stumbled across, it was none other than the legendary how-to series for everything in life: " Magic for Dummies "... Because of course it would. I found a copy of it online and so began my journey into prestidigitation.
Having been a sheltered, shy kid that grew up in front of a video game console and didn't really have a social life nor did anything extracurricular, it was an odd day when I saw a poster for my middle school's talent show and felt a desire to perform my newfound hobby. I had never done anything like this in my life, and I was about to go up in front of the entire school of 500 kids? This was quite the unexpected character development to say the least. Despite both my butterflies in my stomach and my parent's incredibly perplexed faces, I got their approval, and so geared up three tricks to perform -- including the hand trick.
I still remember the day of the talent show. We were led in single file into the gymnasium. Those who were performing sat in folding chairs in front of the bleachers. I sat down holding a small string bag containing a can of coke, a plastic cup, a dime, and a small Tupperware filled with ashes. As the people went up and my name grew closer to being called, my heart trembled in my chest. I clenched my string bag tighter, and tighter. I couldn't tell you what the acts before me were because all I could think of was me going up in front of the whole school. My whole person was shaking from anxiety and I felt like my mind was in a high from the fight or flight response. I clapped and I was snapped out of this daze by my name being called. The trembling stopped and the only thing I felt was the head high and anxious rhythm of my heartbeat. I stepped outside my comfort zone and stepped into the middle of the gym. I opened with a gag from the book: "Let's get to know each other a little better, turn to the person directly behind you and shake their hand". My nerves left me as the whole room erupted in laughter, pandemonium, and kids in the very back row slapping the gym wall because no one else was behind them. I calm them down and go right into the hand trick. Perfect execution. I pull out a coin, plastic cup, and the sealed soda can. I perfectly perform the trick. And finally, I brought a spectator up and did the ashes through hand trick. I then simply end by saying that's all I had for them and thank you for watching...
The whole school cheered and gave me a standing ovation. To my great surprise.
That day would be the spark that ignited the flame to amazing opportunities I never would have had the blessing to be a part of. From winning high school/college talent shows, to working corporate events, to meeting incredible people (such as my wonderful wife), the journey has been nothing short of "magical". It is my great desire and pleasure to continue the journey by entertaining others and sharing the flame through simple, engaging, and impossible mysteries. :)
Of course, along with a journey like this, no one is exempt from the change that comes with the passage of time. Since 2018, I had been performing tricks and building my brand under the stage name "Magic MayHeim". However, as of 2026, I have now officially rebranded to something more on par to where I am at both spiritually and convictionally: Brandon Heim the Mystery Guy. All that said, I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with you and amaze you at your next event! :)
